Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against The Universe Review
Its been over 5 years since the last episode of Phineas and Ferb, but with the release of "Candace
Against The Universe" we are able to see most of our beloved characters from the series again.
Unfortunately despite being set in space, Meep does not make an appearance but we get to see
the whole Danville gang teaming up with Dr. Doofenshmirtz to save both Vanessa and Candace from
rogue aliens. Of course everyone's favorite platypus, Perry is helping from the shadows. Just as the title
accentuates, Candace is the main star of the show, this movie really dives deep into her as a character
and gives her a lot of character development. Specially it focuses on her obsession with busting her
brothers and the driving force behind that. This turns out to be an insecurity with not being special and
that she believes her brothers completely overshadow her. The relationship between Candace and her
brothers is one of the most heartwarming sibling relationships in animation, in my opinion, and it was
done so well in this movie. When Candace was rescued by her brothers and she ran away because she
was so ashamed of what she has done, but is reassured by her brothers that she was special to them was
the most heartwarming part of this movie and is, in my opinion, the best moment in this movie. It
really demonstrates that special bond between siblings. Like in the original series, the songs are
bopping especially, the final song that is sung by our main characters after they triumph over the giant
plant. The antagonist Big Doctor is an alright antagonist, she serves her role as the villain and in being
a foil for Candace by showing her as a person that has a bad relationship with her brothers. Although it
was interesting that they chose to make the villain a tyrant that has enslaved a group of people since
they have already done that in their first movie "Across The 2nd Dimension" with an actual evil
dictator Doofenshmirtz. In terms of other characters, despite tagging along for the whole ride, Buford
and Baljeet doesn't have anything to do or any character development. Isabella gets a bit more with her
beef off with Doofenshmirtz on who should be the leader of the rescue group. She really gets heated
with the doctor because of his utter incompetence and incidence of being the leader cause he is the only
adult in the group. Besides that, she gets nothing else in terms of side plots or development. Phineas
and Ferb actually don't have character development either. But despite the lack of character
development for most characters, it works because Candace gets all that development and is without
a doubt the main protagonist of this movie. In terms of jokes and gags, most of it is cheesy and long-
winded but I still loved it because of that Phineas and Ferb flare. I thought the whole gag of the alien
getting too excited and blowing up with the sound essentially being "Candace" was pretty funny.
I also thought the whole race of enslaved aliens being complete cowards and fitting their name of
Cow-ward-ly people was guiltily hilarious. In terms of animation, it was of course improved from the
regular episodes but retaining that Phineas and Ferb art-style and charm. The action sequence during
the asteroid field and Perry was doing everything he can to protect the rescue group's spaceship was
amazing.
Overall I thought the main plot-point with Candace was done very well and I enjoyed every minute of
the film but I still like "Across The 2nd Dimension" more. I give this film an 8.5 out of 10,
it still a great animated film. It is definitely going to be popular for all the Phineas and Ferb fans. I
hope that this isn't the last Phineas and Ferb content we get.
