Kipo Season 2 Review
Wow, Kipo season 2 really took what was great about its first season and took it up a couple of
notches, making an even greater season than it's first. Season one took it's time world-building and
introducing us to our main cast of characters. It also most importantly set up questions that would be
ultimately be answered in season 2. One of the best parts of season 2 was the payoffs to the questions
set up by the first season. From Kipo's powers to Kipo's mother to Scarlemagne's relationship with
Kipo's parents and much more. Not only did we get big payoffs to a lot of questions but we also got
huge payoffs in terms of character arcs. Kipo's arc this season is very derivative of the chosen one
stereotype where the main character has learned to control her powers in order to save everyone but
has to overcome mental barriers to do so. This in itself is very common in coming of age stories
but the way that Kipo's arc is tied to learning her origins and her parents' backstory really elevates
her arc into a very compelling storyline. I would say Kipo season 2 does the chosen one arc better
than the recent She-Ra series does for its whole 5 seasons. The problem with She-Ra was that it
dragged on the arc for all 5 seasons with each season repeating the cycle of Adora's self-doubt in
herself to be She-Ra which Kipo side steps because the original season of Kipo was not about Kipo
being the chosen one but rather a girl just trying to get back to her people. So the whole premise of
the show does not hinge on Kipo maintaining the arc of the chosen one and can move along with
new storylines, unlike She-Ra. This alone wouldn't make the show standout but not only does Kipo
have a great main storyline that is interwoven together such with interesting character arcs like
Scarlemagne's tragic past and Dr. Emilia's reveal to be the true villain of the series. This is all
top off with fun action sequences with a popping soundtrack that rival's the first season. This show
with it's unique of hip hop and other music really sets itself apart from other animated series. This
series also one-ups itself on character design with Kipos' transformations and Gus the fungus mute
with a child's personality and temper to boot.
One of the most standout scenes for me is a scene they straight up, take from Naruto, where Kipo is
trapped in her mega jaguar state and confronts her mute self in her mind like Naruto does to Kurama.
This scene was so well done and hit me hard on that nostalgia. Overall this season really raised the
stakes of this series and developed the characters we were introduced in the first season in
meaningful and interesting ways. The pacing of the season was well done, I didn't feel at any point of
that the story was dragging or that there were any unnecessary filler episodes. The show was on
point with moving the story along without rushing any moments. Besides's Kipo's and Scarlemagne's
arcs, I thought Wolf's arc was very good, unfortunately, Benson was regulated to having a half baked
romance with a side character that had little to no screen time the whole season. Benson helped out
our main group but didn't have any real arc besides the half baked romance, which sucks cause he is
a great character. Dave, the lovable cycle of life mute was used as comedic relief like the first
season so there isn't any change there. Ultimately this season was very enjoyable for me and I would
give this season a 9 out of 10. I'm looking forward to watching Kipo season 3.
