Locke & Key Review
Based on the comic series of the same name, Locke & Key is a mystery/fantasy show about the
Locke family who are the proud owners of a house full of magical keys. Moving from Seattle right
after their father's death with their mother, the Locke siblings: Tyler, Kinsey and Brody soon
discover that their new home isn't what it seems. Brody the youngest sibling, is the first one to
discover the existence of the keys but eventually enlists the help of his siblings to fight off the main
antagonist of this series. Initially known as the well lady, the main antagonist is a mysterious figure
that is hell-bent all getting all the magical keys. Throughout the series the show does a great job of
building up the mystery behind the keys and the well lady. Every episode adds new elements to the
story such as new keys or snippets of backstory about the Locke siblings' father Randell. Going
into this show, I had no prior knowledge of the source material of this series so I'll be giving my
impression as a casual viewer. This show's atmosphere especially in the beginning, has a lot of
horror/thriller elements even though overall it isn't really a horror series. In terms of horror moments,
it has less than Stranger Things but there was one moment in the first two episodes that really creep
me out. I thought that the camera work and sound really elevated the horror elements of this show.
In terms of story, I was really invested in the ever-growing mystery surrounding the well lady and
Randell's past. Ultimately the answers to these mysteries, really payed off at the end of the series
while still leaving a lot of room for mysteries surrounding other elements of the show. I found
the main cast of characters very interesting including the well lady who is actually my favorite
character in the show. The development of the Locke family was interesting because each them had
to deal with the trauma of their dad's death in their own way. Seeing them grow as both individuals
and as a family really worked for this show. The supporting characters are hit or miss though, some
them are really interesting and fleshed out while some of them just didn't get enough development.
In the end, the overall writing of the show was very good but there is room for improvement.
The concept of the keys are very creative and fun, but ultimately that comes directly from the source
material so I can't say if the show did a good job in representing them in the show. Overall this is very
enjoyable show and if you like mystery or shows like Stranger Things this is up your alley. In terms
of enjoyment, I would give this 8.5 out of 10. I look forward to a second season and hopefully
they can expand on the mystery of the keys.
