Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts First Impressions

Dreamworks, animated shows for Netflix are pretty well written and animated.

Although people tend to remember the disappointing last few seasons of Voltron and their

controversial design choices for She Ra. There was also the How to Train your Dragon cannon series

that takes place in between the movies, that I believe are better than the movies in terms of

writing but ultimately no one really watched those shows. Then there is Kipo and the Age of

Wonderbeasts, which no one had any clue was a thing. The first new IP from Dreamworks

was dropped on Netflix at the beginning of January and it's pretty good. Currently, I'm 6

episodes in and the colorful world surrounding this show is sucking me in. The show taking place in

post-apocalyptic modern earth where most things have mutated and humans are living underground

or scavenging on the surface. The mutation aspect to the show has allowed them to create

some really interesting and fun characters in this show such as Dave who is one of the main

supporting characters in this show who is a dwarf size cockroach that continuously goes through

life-cycle phases in a matter of seconds or hours. For instance, baby to kid to teenager to adult to old

man and repeat. Which is a crazy cool concept to see in the show and the show is chock-full of cool

mutated creatures. Narrative wise, we follow Kipo, who is a teenage human girl that has spent her

whole life underground until she suddenly ends up above ground separated from her people.

Kipo acts as the audience's stand-in, for she has no real knowledge of the inner workings of the

the surface just like the audience. The first 2 episodes introduce us to Kipo's companions consisting

of  two mutes, an adorable mutated pig, Mandu and Dave and two human kids from the surface

named Wolf and Benson. The main plot of the show is for Kipo to get back to her people with the

help of her  companions, along the way they encounter both good and bad mutes who want to either

capture them or just eat them because humans are rare. Every episode introduces new elements to the

show including new characters and mysteries specifically relating to Kipo and Wolf. Overall I'm

really enjoying the show so far, this is partly because I'm getting a lot of adventure time vibes

which is a good thing. I recommend you give this show a try if your looking for an new animated

show on Netflix and have already watched the likes of the Dragon Prince.
